Senior Briley Simpson entered to win the National English Honor Society Common Reader scholarship. It is a scholarship competition for NEHS members for schools all across the world. Each year they pick a book, this year’s being “The Botanist’s Daughter” by Kayte Nunn. Briley Simpson was able to choose from a variety of different prompts and had to write an essay over the novel that is based on the prompt of choice. Simpson’s essay particularly stood out and was chosen for the scholarship. Simpson was fortunate enough that she already had her essay prepared before she thought to enter. The book just happened to be the same book she was previously assigned for English class. Simpson struggled with the paper at the start. Simpson said she spent most of her time “scrounging around for evidence.” Her English teacher, Mrs. Tara Tollett, noticed how hard she was working for this paper, and instantly knew Simpson needed to enter the competition. “It was shocking. I didn’t think I was going to get it.” Simpson explained. It is simple to say that everything she put into her piece was all worth it. Hard work tends to always pay off.
