Have you been looking around for a sport to use up your free time? Look no further; swimming is one of the best sports that uses every major muscle in your body. “Swimming is a great exercise. It builds endurance, and those who are successful at it overcome a lot,” said Coach Hunter Johnston, our swim coach at Heritage High.
Swimming is one of the top audience draws at the Olympics. Although it is not as popular as other sports, swimming needs to be popularized around our school.
Swimming involves four strokes; butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. Most swimmers are better at some strokes than others, so that is the event they usually compete in at meets. It is a winter sport, which may be confusing, but all pools are indoors, and most importantly, heated. Not much gear is required, however, goggles and a more professional swim suit are a necessity. Heritage provides the team’s caps.
There are several meets during the season, hosted at different pools with various schools, and you constantly meet new people. A senior swimmer Tyler Braly, who has been swimming for nine years, said, “I loved swimming so much that I just kept doing it. I really enjoy the friendships I’ve made, and swimming after a hard day just feels refreshing.” Joining the team doesn’t require tryouts. There are swimmers assorted at all skill levels, but swimming requires dedication and commitment. Regular practices are scheduled often, multiple times a week. The Coach plays a crucial role in helping team members improve technique. Our team provides training fit to different abilities, which allows swimmers to develop at their own pace.
