Every year, Heritage High School welcomes aspiring yearbook creators from across the region for the Jostens Regional Yearbook Workshop. This specific event provided students and advisors with invaluable skills and any type of insights into the art of yearbook production.
Participation plays an important role in how we engage in hands-on sessions led by industry professionals, covering topics such as photography, design, creative new ideas, how to improve the yearbook this year, and storytelling. The Yearbook Workshop emphasized the importance of capturing “the moment” and the school spirit memories that last a lifetime. Mrs. Cleo Gravette, the Yearbook Advisor from Ringgold High School, said, “I do believe that the Yearbook Workshop will give opportunities for networking with students.”
In addition to skill-building opportunities sessions, attendees had the chance to collaborate, share ideas, give excellent feedback, and network with peers from neighboring schools. The Jostens Yearbook Workshop has many benefits to our team or any Yearbook Team. Mr. Peace—the dedicated Journalism teacher at Heritage High School—has been preparing everything for this day and has been a guiding force for the Yearbook Staff. Time flew by with all the activities going on that day, including layout design and digital editing. Students have learned about visual editing, storytelling, and how it can affect the capture of the story of school life through photography.
Students who were at the Yearbook Workshop were very excited to learn new knowledge for their yearbook this year. “So far I have learned so much more than before, and on how to create impactful layouts and visual storytelling,” said Brylee White, a member of the Yearbook Staff at Ringgold High School.
Mrs. Gravette encouraged students to apply the skills learned during the event for their upcoming Yearbook Workshop. “Actually, I brought eight girls with me, and they are already so pumped up about going back and sharing with their classmates all the different skills that they learn.” She also mentions how to make the yearbook strictly directed towards their school and not just a general “photo album.” Students have left feeling motivated and equipped with tools they can certainly use to create a standout yearbook. The Heritage High School Journalism team has gained the skills for any storytelling, digital editing, and photography from the Jostens Yearbook Workshop and is now poised for further success this year, capturing all the “real moments” of school spirit.
