The 2024 World Series will be remembered as one of the most thrilling World Series in all of baseball’s history. This year’s championship featured the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees, two of the most successful programs in the MLB (Major League Baseball). The Yankees have the most World Series titles in all of MLB history with 27, and the Dodgers have the fifth most with eight.
The Dodgers picked up momentum early in the first game. Gerrit Cole was the starting pitcher for the Yankees. He threw well, going six innings, and giving up four hits, one earned run, zero walks, and four strikeouts. Both Clay Holmes and Tommy Kahnle went two-tenths of an inning. Holmes was left untouched, however Kahnle ended up giving up one hit. Luke Weaver went one and two-tenths of an inning untouched. Jake Cousins and Nestor Cortes Jr. both pitched one-tenth of an inning, giving up one hit and two runs with one walk. On the Yankees’ offensive side Gleyber Torres and Jazz Chislom Jr. both led the offense with two hits. Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo, Austin Wells, and Alex Verdugo all had one hit a piece. Stanton was the only player for the Yankees to hit a home run. Cole received the loss.
Jack Flaherty was the starting pitcher for the Dodgers. He threw five and one-tenth innings, allowing five hits, one walk, six strikeouts, and two earned runs. Anthony Banda threw two tenths of an inning, allowing two hits and one walk, however zero runs. Brusdar Graterol and Alex Veisa both threw one inning, remaining untouched. Michael Kopech threw two tenths of an inning and went untouched. However Blake Treinen threw one and one tenth of an inning, allowing one run. Freddie Freeman and Tommy Edman both led the Dodgers offense with two hits a piece. Shoehi Ohtani, Teoscar Hernandez, and Kike Hernandez all had one hit. Freeman had one home run, which was a walkoff grandslam; that was the first time that had ever happened in MLB history. However, that was not the only time Freeman made history in this series. Flaherty received the win for game one. The Dodgers won six to three.
The Dodgers were hot now, winning the next two games four to two. However, with a chance to win it in game four, they ran into some trouble. Ben Casparius was the starting pitcher. He threw two innings allowing one hit, one run, three walks, with one strikeout. Daniel Hudson threw one inning allowing two hits, four runs, one walk, with one strikeout. Landon Knack threw four innings allowing two hits, one run, one walk, with two strikeouts. Brent Honeywell threw one inning, allowing four hits, five runs, and one walk. Offensively, Freeman, Mookie Betts, Ohtani, Hernandez, Gavin Lux, and Will Smith all had hits. Smith and Freeman both hit home runs.
The Yankees’ offense is what won them this game, however, their pitchers were excellent as well. Luis Gil got the start for the Yankees. He threw four innings, allowing five hits, four runs, two walks, and one strikeout. Tim Hill and Mark Leiter Jr. both tossed two tenths of an inning untouched. Holmes and Weaver both tossed one and one tenth of an inning untouched. Tim Mayza pitched one untouched inning. Anthony Volpe and Wells led the offense for New York with two hits each. Torres, Soto, Judge, Chislom Jr., and Verdugo all had one hit. Torres, Volpe, and Wells all hit one home run. The Yankees won 11-4.
With the series three to one and the Dodgers having another chance to end the series they were ready to win it. Cole got the start for the Yankees once again and continued to throw well. He went six innings four hits, zero runs, four walks, and six strikeouts. Holmes threw one tenth of an inning untouched. Kahnle threw one tenth of an inning, allowing two hits and two runs. Weaver threw one and one tenth of an inning allowing one hit. Leiter Jr. threw two tenths of an inning untouched. Judge and Volpe led the offense with two hits. Stanton, Chislom Jr., and Soto all had one hit. Judge, Stanton, and Chislom all hit one home run. The Yankees won 4-11.
Flaherty got the start once again as well, throwing one and a tenth inning, allowing four hits, four runs, one walk, and one strikeout. Banda and Graderol both threw two tenths of an inning untouched. Treinen threw two and one tenth innings untouched. Ryan Brasier, Walker Buehler, Veisa, and Kopech all threw one inning. Everyone was untouched except for Braiser, allowing one run. Buhler threw the final inning. Hernandez and Hernandez led the offense with two hits. Betts, Freeman, and Edman all had one hit. This game the Dodgers won seven, making them World Series champions. Freeman also made history by hitting the most home runs that have ever been hit in a World Series.
Overall, this was an exciting Series for the entire world. Despite many people’s favorite teams not being in it, many watched. The World Series averaged 15.8 million viewers. This was a World Series that will go down in history for many years to come with Freeman breaking two records.
