The rivalry between the University of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology is often referred to as “clean, old-fashioned hate” and is one of the longest rivalries in college football. This fierce rivalry dates back to 1893 and has grown into a cultural phenomenon in the state of Georgia, capturing the hearts and minds of fans from both schools.
This rivalry is more than just a football game; it is a clash of the two cultures and traditions. The University of Georgia located in Athens, Georgia, is best known for its football program. The Georgia Institute of Technology located in Atlanta, Georgia, takes pride in its academics, however is very competitive in all sports. Both teams’ competitiveness and pride is what makes these games so difficult for both teams. Over the years, this rivalry has brought countless memorable moments not just in school history but in college football history as well. However, this year’s game had something nobody was expecting.
This game started out like any other regular game. In the first quarter, Georgia Tech hit a field goal to make it 3-0. In the second quarter, they tacked the lead on. The first touchdown came from Haynes King with a two yard rushing touchdown, Aidan Birr kicked a field goal for the extra point. For the second touchdown, Jamal Haynes received a touchdown pass from King. The extra point from Birr is good. At halftime, Georgia Tech leads 17-0. In the third quarter things start to take a change, Georgia scores a touchdown. The touchdown was on a two yard pass to Oscar Delp from Carson Beck, they went for the two point conversion, but they failed. Georgia Tech went into the fourth quarter leading 17-6.
This is where things take a turn. In the fourth quarter with 14:17 left Birr hits a field goal making it 20-6. With eight minutes and 18 seconds left, Nate Frazier of the Georgia Bulldogs scores a touchdown on a one yard run. Peyton Woodring’s kick for the extra point is good. Georgia Tech now only leads 20-13. With five minutes and 37 seconds left, Georgia Tech tacks on another touchdown with King for an 11 yard run, and Birr is good for the extra point. Georgia Tech now leads 27-13.
With only three minutes and 39 seconds left, Georgia proceeds to score another touchdown on a 17 yard pass from Beck to Dominic Lovett. Woodring is good for the extra point. Georgia Tech now leads 27-20. Somehow Georgia scores on a three yard pass from Beck to Lovett, Woodring is good for the extra point. The game is now tied 27-27. In the first overtime Georgia scores first with London Humphries receiving a 14-yard touchdown pass from Beck. Woodrings extra point is good. Then right after Eric Singleton Jr ties it for Georgia Tech scoring on a 12 yard pass from King. Birr’s extra point attempt is good, and the game is tied 34-34. Going into the second overtime King gets Georgia Tech the lead with a one yard touchdown. Failed two point conversion. Georgia proceeds to tie it up with Cash Jones receiving a touchdown pass from Beck. Two point conversion failed.
It continued to stay tied 42-42 for five more overtimes. However, in the eighth overtime Frazier runs in a two point conversion to make the score 44-42 and Georgia Tech cannot score this time, and Georgia wins 44-42. This was the second longest overtimes in college football with eight, the longest being nine overtimes with Penn State and Illinois.
