On December 9th, the first round of the annual Technology Competition took place at the Catoosa Career Academy. To find students interested in participating in the competition, students in Programming and Career Technical classes are were if they are interested, and they then went on to participate in the county-wide competition. The competition has many different areas of technology to compete in; projects can be labeled as internet applications, graphic design, device modification, video creation, or animation. Each area of technology requires only one student from each school to compete.
For the first round of technology competitions Heritage brought twelve students. These talented students included Boone Wells, Ruah Moon, Elliott Afonshina, Riley Womack, Vivian Lee, Kai Courtney, Mason Courtney, Luke Horne, Ryan Itani, Spencer Boydston, Gage Ford, and Ethan Parker. The students were required to create some type of technology pertaining to the area that they are interested in. Then, they are judged on their software and how well they are able to present it. Every student that was invited from our school won first place in their respective areas of technology. Therefore, every student that was invited to the first round of competitions from our school gets to move on to the second round.
The next round will be a state-wide competition at Highlands College in Rome, Georgia, on January 31st. Students who specialize in technology all over North Georgia will participate in this competition. The second round is very similar to the first round, but they use the criticism from the judges from regionals to improve their products. Mr. Chris Douglas is involved in helping students prepare for the next round of competitions less than a few weeks away. “In between the first and second competitions, we typically sit down and refine what we’re working on. We get better with it, we make the project better, and we explain it better.” He described the event as being very fun and he is very excited about the second competition. With all of the students reaching the second round, we are very proud of our generals and excited to see how they do in following years!
