As the Lady Generals basketball team continue their season, they have made many improvements and continue to have an amazing record. So far their record is 12-2. They have had an amazing season, and they have been working hard.
Starting the year off, the team had to find a new way to work together and communicate as there were new faces on the team. Looking back at their season last year the team has come together. Head JV Coach Gribben said, “It’s usually a steep curve for incoming freshmen to learn how to play within an offense or what we’re trying to learn defensively.” He continued, “But I think that we were kind of ready to go by game one this year. It’s a pretty bright group of freshmen that have come through with some sophomores sprinkled in.” The team’s success is not just based on one person; they have worked together to win these games and learned how to play together under pressure.”
They have had many successful games, but the best game according to freshman, Madi Simpson, was playing LFO at home. She said, “We had really good defense and we did good things on offense.” It was a very close game, but the Lady Generals fought hard and won the game. Another player, Abby Wilson, was also asked what the best game was, and she said, “Northwest because we worked together, and had disciplined defense.” The team’s game against Northwest went into overtime, and they finished the game winning by two points. It hasn’t been easy for the Lady Generals but they have pushed out with a win every game.
Even though these girls are a great season, they all want one thing and that is to be on the varsity level. Varsity Head coach Greg Elkins said, “One thing is strength. We got to take the weight room seriously because I think you can tell a huge difference in someone like Macie and even Reese, who’s worked really hard in the weight room.” He added on, “I think the second thing is we’ve got to get in the gym and shoot. Our JV is not a great shooting basketball team. So I think we have to start getting in the gym and get more shots up this summer.”
As they continue out their season they are looking to get better in the gym and weight room. These girls have practiced to be the team they are right now, and they are prepared to work this summer to be even better.
