The esports team is a team ran by Ms. Leslie Sawyer, the game design teacher. It has been a great program for Heritage that has grown immensely since its start six years ago. This is the fifth esports season. When the program started, the only game available to play was League of Legends. It has grown a lot, even having some teams go to State the past few years. Nowadays, the program has many options, including Mario Kart, Rocket League, and Super Smash Brothers, although the most popular two are Super Smash Brothers and Rocket League. These teams are mostly self-selected, although Mrs. Sawyer does help them sort each team based on their win-loss record.
The Super Smash Bros teams have been very popular with students and are very successful. These teams were able to make it to state during the all season this year. The teams that made it to State were Heritage Beasts, which consisted of seniors Austin Whaley, Hayden Powers, and Sammy Jones and the Select Generals, which consisted of seniors Joshua Toole, Alex Johnson, and sophomore Raziel Haley. Haley was one of the members to make it to State, and they said their favorite memory from this season was just making it to State surrounded by the people they had spent so much time with.
The event works with competitions each week on Wednesday for around an hour and a half. They log into the program and compete against other schools. They get situated into a bracket, and then compete against others from many different schools. It isn’t sorted by region, it is just the entire state of Georgia. Heritage is very proud to say that their two teams placed 12th and 24th in State for esports season five! The program intends to continue its reign and play again in the spring semester.
