In previous years, students requested their classes on their own through Infinite Campus without having to talk face-to-face with their counselor. Students were instructed by their teachers, but they couldn’t ask for advice one on one. This led to many miscommunications, and sometimes requesting classes that weren’t a good fit for the student. However, this year, Heritage is implementing a process called advisement. This way, students meet with their counselors, and discuss which classes would lead them in the best direction for graduation.
Mrs. Brown briefly discussed the new advisement process, “I think there’s so many more options now than ever before, with dual enrollment, career academy, and work based learning.” She further explained that they made this change for the students to be able to receive advice on which path to take, especially with the new opportunities that students are given every year. “We just wanted to be able to inform the kids individually on what’s best for you,” Mrs. Brown said.
Before the advisement, an assembly was held to help clear up confusion on the classes, and share new opportunities for students to choose from.
Hopefully this new and personalized way of guiding students will help them throughout high school and the future.
