The Georgia Thespian Conference, more commonly known as ThesCon, is an annual conference hosted by Columbus State University that provides growth and leadership opportunities to those who attend. It’s an in-person event that welcomes thousands of actors each year to help better each of their acting abilities, whether that be improvisation or physical attributes! Here at Heritage, our thespian troupe attended, and they are considered the best of the best among their peers, and by their teacher, Mrs. Grayson Gray.
These students are chosen to go participate in a sort of workshop that provides help over many aspects of their musical career, while allowing them to watch other high schools’ shows for inspiration. “I would rate it a 10 out of 10, it’s a crazy busy weekend, and we go non-stop, but it’s a really fun one,” Mrs. Gray said. “I think they provide a really positive environment to learn in.”
They also help the thespians get a head start in life by allowing them to audition for colleges they may be interested in. Although not everyone is required to do this, it’s heavily encouraged by their teacher and peers! It’s a learning experience for everyone, even their teachers; it allows a different perspective on future shows and on the thespians’ future lives in the musical industry.
This isn’t the first time they’ve been to ThesCon. Mrs. Gray has taken her students to this event for the last four years, and she is absolutely planning on doing it next year, though there may be a few changes to the process next time. “We may revamp next year and kind of require them to do college auditions,” Mrs. Gray stated.
Overall, ThesCon is a paradise for thespians alike, and provides a safe, comfortable space to learn more about themselves and their talents. Nobody is there to judge if they fail or make a mistake. They make all three days a wonderful experience, despite the hard work they have to do.
