AP Art is making a comeback at Heritage High School after being cut since the fall semester of 2024. The AP Art class was removed from the class catalog at Heritage due to there not being enough students enrolling in the class. It recently came back this year after an art student pushed to have it be a part of the AP classes offered here.

The AP Art class, taught by Mrs. Lindsay Wells, has had such an impact on the art students at Heritage High School. It is a crucial part of preparing students for a career in art. A lot of students benefit from this class. Mrs. Wells said, “It kind of gets them used to the workload of what a college course is going to be. And the kind of pace a college course works at.” It helps with getting scholarships and building your portfolio, as well as you can submit your art to the college board. Senior Vivian Lee explained how all the art classes prepare you and lead you up to taking AP Art. “[It’s] like the final big class that you would take in high school as an art student.” Overall, it’s just a fun class for art students to take and is a huge learning experience. It allows for a creative outlet for students to express themselves in school.
After it was taken away many art students were devastated by the cut. Lee said, ”I was really upset last semester when they got rid of it, so I went to the principal about it.” She then continued to explain how she put in the effort to get it back in this school by emailing the school and county office. There were so many steps in the process of it all and it sure did make an impact. Thanks to her and others’ efforts so many students are now again benefitting from AP Art.
There are so many interesting things that happen during the class. A lot of students take it not only because it’s fun, but because they do a lot of observational drawings and representational arts. Many students are glad that the class is back, and most art students are excited to take it in the future. The art students at Heritage are thrilled to start and submit their portfolios for college.
