This year Literary had new State Champions in the Boys’ Quartet, consisting of senior Cadin Minjarez, freshman Kamden Watson, senior Keller Watson, and junior Maddox Weaver. We had three teams compete at State: Boys’ Quartet, Girls’ Trio, and Girls’ Solo. The Boys’ Quartet ended up winning State and the Girls’ Trio got runner-up. These students brought these prestigious win back to the Taj.
Winning the competition at Bremen High School was a dream for the quartet. The boys prepped beyond what most people expected. “We took every first half lunch to come into the choir room and rehearse during the first half of lunch, sometimes after school, and sometimes we got together after school, on our own time,” said Kamden. Bremen High was an amazing place to compete at. “Everyone was nice, after we won some random person came up and asked to sing a song for us, because he was in a barbershop quartet,” said Kamden. The boys got runner-up last year, so winning State was very impactful. “I was really hoping for it, it just felt really good just to be able to one up ourselves from last year,” said Keller.

The Girls’ Trio team was also one of the best at State. They ended up getting runner-up in the event. The team consisted of senior Julia Petteys, sophomore Hannah Johnston, and junior Ceci Ward. The girls ended up doing a lot of prep for the competition; “We practiced everyday during the first half of lunch, and then we practiced for 30 minutes after school,” said Petteys. The practice ended up helping a lot, as the girls scored runner-up. The environment at the competition was very familiar and friendly. “It was chill and cool, everyone there was a choir person. So it was like everyone was there to just sing and have fun,” said Petteys. The event was very impactful for these young students. The competition was full of high running emotions: “I felt very proud of myself and the other girls for getting to the State competition,” said Johnston.
