This semester, four of our Heritage students became finalists and one became an alternate for the Governor’s Honors Program. Abigail Stoetzner, Ceci Ward, Hannah Johnston, Hudson Case, and Nicolas Anchondo all qualified to spend time at Georgia Southern University this summer. All of the students were selected for their inclination towards music in multiple fields. In June, they will spend five weeks at Georgia Southern to study the fine arts and get a taste of the college experience.
Anchondo and Case were selected by the band director, Bill Wynn, for GHP because of their talent in jazz band. Students have to go through a series of interviews after they’ve been selected to make it to the finalists. All of the interviews are very unique; some are in person and some are online. “In one of the interviews, I had to submit a video of me playing music. In the final round, I had to play in front of the judges and get interviewed for a while,” Anchondo stated. The process can be pretty nerve wracking; the interviews are very thorough to make sure the student is right for the program. The program is very intense, but these students are very passionate in their subject areas and persevered to make it to the finals. “It was intimidating to perform in front of people that know everything about music, but it encouraged me to do my best,” Case said.
Getting to spend five weeks at Georgia Southern University studying what you are most passionate about as a high schooler is an amazing way to prepare for your future. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and we are so proud that multiple of our students get to be a part of this program.
