Heritage’s Girl’s Golf team had a beautiful season this year. With their first game held on March 10th, they have worked very hard to accomplish their goals in the sport. Their game on the 10th was at the Lady Rambler Invitational where they placed 9th! Sophomore Cam Carter was the low medalist with a clean score of 100, freshman Kellie Boehm had a score of 116, and junior McKinley McIntosh had a score of 118. Their coach, Ms. Taylor Lutgen, was very proud of this game. “She’s only a sophomore, Cam, and she’s competitive with seniors. It’s really exciting!”
Their next match was on the 11th of March against North Whitfield. Heritage had a score of 100 from Carter and junior Laney Williams. Despite the great performance on our end, Northwest posted an 84 from their number one player. The JV team also had a match this day, but were only able to play through seven holes. The JV team lost by two shots after getting an 84, with Whitfield scoring an 82.
Bear Trace was held on the 17th of March, where Heritage played against Ridgeland. Ridgeland posted a score of 186, which Heritage won against with a score of 153. Coach Lutgen was very proud of the girls’ performance. “We beat them by about 20 strokes, which is pretty significant!” said Coach Lutgen. “All of the girls were having a really good time, and we were being really competitive with them which is tough.”
On the 8th of April the Lady Generals went to a game against Lafayette and Gordon Lee. The girls played hard, but they unfortunately were beaten by one stroke against Lafayette, placing third. One member of the team, junior Jules Harbort, said that this was actually her favorite match yet. “The girls I played with were really nice, we just all had a good time.” Harbort is a very successful player who really enjoys being on the team and the opportunities it provides. “I’ve been able to play at, by the end of the season, over 13 different courses, and I’m just a junior in high school. That’s a crazy accomplishment.” The team’s last event this season was the State competition, which Carter will be attending as an individual.
The Lady General’s team is absolutely very successful, and their coach couldn’t be prouder. “Working with them is probably the best part honestly. You see them grow as golfers and as people.” Lutgen was a golfer at Heritage during her time at the high school, and wanted to make an impact on the students. “When I became Golf Coach, I decided we’re going to change the stigma of letting people down, being in our head about things, or thinking we have to score every hole. No, we’re out here to grow our skills as golfers, to have fun, and to get our tan on,” Lutgen said with a smile.
