This season’s Winter Guard performed their show “One Last Time” to the song “The House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert. The team had 18 people ranging from freshman to seniors. They did spectacularly at the competitions they performed in. They attended six competitions this season, and one of those includes a circuit championship all over Northwest Georgia and Southeast Tennessee named the Southern Association of Performance Arts (SAPA). They placed first in four of the competitions, second in one competition, and fourth overall at their Championship competition.
The members of the team were so excited to win. Senior Lanie Keith said, “Honestly, I really enjoyed winning, because we haven’t won in a Winter Guard competition in a really, really long time”. Their last victory was in February of 2022 at Creek View High School. It felt amazing to put in all that hard work and finally win. Freshman Scarlett Rusk said that her favorite competition was the one that she attended in Marietta, Georgia. Coach Sayra Cook said, “I really love the beginning of our show. It showcases a dance with all the kids. It’s an area that I really wanted to focus on improving for the guard overall—and they did!” She also said, “I think my favorite moment was during our first competition when we placed first. All the kids’ reactions were so genuinely surprised and excited.”
Villa Rica High School is where Coach Cook believed it was their best show overall, since it was later in the season and “everyone was really locking into their best.” It was satisfying to coach these people and finally watch it fall into place. They crushed it this season, and we can’t wait to see what they will accomplish next season!
