For years, Ringgold High School has had a dedicated ‘Rival Week’ for Heritage, in the week before the upcoming football game. During this week, they have many dress up days to get their school and team ready for the game that Friday.
Kenzie Slaughter saw a post on Ringgold’s Instagram page about their upcoming spirit days and realized that we should show more Generals’ spirit around our school. At the same time, Tru Johnson thought of this idea with Lorelai Canady, decided on the name Ringgold Rivalry Week, and came up with a list of themes for the week.
During the rival week, the dress-up themes included: Making-the-Bed-Monday (Pj day), Turn-Around-Tuesday (teachers and students swap outfits), Who’s-Your-Daddy-Wednesday (dress like a dad), Throwback-Thursday (dress as a decade), and Freedom-Friday (dress in patriotic clothing).
Principal Phillips wanted this week to be a respectful and fun rivalry, instead of being unkind or directly hating on Ringgold’s student body. “We want to have fun, we want to be intense, and we want to win!” Phillips said, “But we have to be respectful too. That’s why every morning I remind you kids, Honor yourself and others, Honor your school, and seek excellence,” he added.
Slaughter also hoped this week brought Heritage students together with fun competition. “Don’t be embarrassed to dress up, it’s fun, and it’s something you should participate in.” Slaughter said, “It’s showing spirit for our school and our team,” she continued. ?
Johnson is equally as pepped up for the week. “I hope the students are excited to -fingers crossed- beat Ringgold. Or just get into the spirit and show out this whole week, and prove that we have a chance,” Johnson said.
Maybe you agreed with Johnson and were most excited for Who’s-Your-Daddy-Wednesday, or sided with Slaughter and Phillips, who waited all week for Turn-Around-Tuesday. Either way, we loved seeing the Generals’ in spirit all week long, dressing up and supporting your fellow student athletes, while cheering on the biggest game of the school year.
