On February 25th, 1997, Elliott Smith blessed the world with his third studio album entitled “Either/Or.” This album features 12 indie-rock tracks that explore themes of self-discovery, authenticity, and existentialism.
Elliott Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and raised in Texas. He spent most of his life in Portland, Oregon. It was in Portland that he began his musical journey and started experimenting with bands. He is best known for his intricate lyricism, and his extraordinary guitar skills. “Either/Or” was his third album, and is widely regarded as his best.
“Either/Or” is named after the philosopher Kierkegaard’s book with the same title. The book is about pursuing the aesthetic pleasure of life, or pursuing the responsibilities and ethics of life. The album explores similar themes like the desire for passion and aesthetics. It delves into the personal struggles we all inevitably endure throughout life, and aligns with Kierkegaard’s focus on personal perspectives. The tracks on this album perfectly align with the book’s principles, and truly shows Smith’s artistry and song writing skills.
The 12 songs feature incredible guitar work, complex and introspective lyrics, and his signature indie-folk sound. The album is one of his most beloved works, and on streaming apps it is his most listened to project. “Either/Or” has many incredible songs. The album opens with “Speed Trials,” a song with a repetitive rhythm and complex lyrics. The fourth track on the album, “Between the Bars,” explores substance abuse. It is one of his most well-known songs due to its poetic lyricism. The fifth track entitled “Pictures of Me,” explores the effects of fame and public perception. The song has a catchy rhythm and is, in my opinion, one of the best tracks on the album. I enjoyed all of the tracks, but those three songs stuck out to me the most.
“Either/Or” is a no-skip album, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys music of the indie-folk genre. Smith’s emotionally vulnerable lyrics and incredible sound led this album to becoming one of the best I’ve ever listened to.
