James Eugene Carrey, an extremely popular Canadian-American actor and comedian, has reportedly been…cloned?
On February 26, 2026, the Cesar Awards were held in Paris, France. The Cesar Awards are France’s highest film honor given to actors who show excellence in French cinema. Jim Carrey was invited to attend this event and receive one of these awards to honor his fifty years in film. It was a beautiful night, and Carrey was presented the Honorary Cesar. However, something felt…off. Fans are saying that Jim Carrey isn’t Jim Carrey. And that the man who attended the Cesar Awards was not the comedian that they have come to know and love. It was a clone.
There is clearly a lot to unpack here, but starting with a physical description, one of the biggest reasons fans think that the Jim Carrey at the Cesar Awards isn’t the real one is because he doesn’t actually look like the real Carrey. At least, not the Carrey that was last presented to the public. Carrey was last seen publicly in November 2025 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony where he introduced the band Soundgarden. This was a really big deal at the time as Carrey had taken a step back in recent years to live out a quiet life on his own after his 50+ years of work. He showed up with a new hairstyle and a few more years added to his still-memorable face. Even after all of that time, it was still the Jim Carrey people recognized. This Jim Carrey, however, who was seen at the Cesar Awards, looks a little different. His hair is still long– a little longer than it was three months ago—but his face has completely changed. It looks softer, and his cheeks seem to be more sunken in. The wrinkles around his eyes don’t look the same way that they did at the Induction Ceremony, making his eyes seem small. Additionally, Jim Carrey has brown eyes, but in these pictures at the Cesar Awards, they almost appear green.
Not only did Jim Carrey look different, he also sounded different. Carrey has always been a loud, boisterous, and extremely sarcastic character. For years, he has openly admitted that he doesn’t really enjoy the spotlight, or even really care for award shows or red carpets. “There’s no meaning to any of this, so I wanted to find the most meaningless thing I could come to and join, and here I am,” Carrey said at NYFW 2017. As someone who has never enjoyed major events like award shows or ceremonies, he seemed overly-emotional and excited at the Cesar Awards. Carrey was smiling and soft-spoken in his interviews at the event, even saying to one reporter, “It’s a wonderful feeling,” when asked about receiving his award. He did his acceptance speech in French, which he later admitted that he practiced like crazy to get right, even shedding a few tears, which is a beautiful sentiment, but completely out of character for him.
But there’s a darker side to these two stories. At NYFW 2017, he goes on to ask the interviewer if she too finds the event meaningless, which she then replies by saying that the event was being held to celebrate icons in media, and was therefore important. “I don’t believe in icons. I don’t believe in personalities. I believe that peace lies beyond personality, beyond intervention in disguise. Beyond the red S that you wear on your chest that makes bullets bounce off. I believe that it’s deeper than that. I believe that we are a field of energy dancing for itself. And I don’t care,” Carrey said. “It’s not our world. None of it is real. We don’t matter, and that’s the good news.” This response was strange, but not totally out of character for him, as Carrey had openly shown his dislike for Hollywood through his words and actions during live and important events such as this, to share his opinion with a wider audience. Continuing the interview from the Cesar Awards, Carrey was talking about his worries in presenting his acceptance speech in French because everyone else who went up before him had spoken so fluently. “I watched everyone talking a thousand miles a minute up there, receiving their awards, and I was like: I’m dead.” Carrey said. But when he’d said it, he’d leaned in and his eyes had widened. Fans claimed he almost looked scared. Later on in the night, Carrey was asked what his favorite silly face was, to which the supposed clone replied, “The face I’m wearing right now.”
Could this be a message? From the clone? That’s what fans seem to think.
People are also asking how Carrey could have even been cloned. And it seems that they still don’t have a clear answer. One theory, however, has recently surfaced saying that the Carrey at the Cesar Awards was really a man wearing a mask. Alexis Stone, a drag artist, created an instagram post with the caption “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey.” In the post, there is a picture of an incredibly realistic prosthetic mask, fit with eye and mouth holes, along with fake teeth and a wig. In the background of the photo is Paris, France where the awards ceremony took place. However, the photo was later debunked by USA TODAY who used an AI detector that read the image as having a 3% authenticity rating. Nonetheless, fans agree that it is still a very real possibility.
But this begs the question, why would Jim Carrey need to be cloned? Well, as previously stated, Carrey has openly shown his hate for Hollywood, as well as the American government, for several years. One of his most prominent moments was in 2014 when he was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! As soon as he entered the set, Carrey immediately threw his hands up, placing them in a triangle formation around his mouth, and sticking out his tongue. He does this for almost a full minute before Kimmel asks him, “What is that? Is that a gang sign?” to which Carrey responded, “Oh, like you don’t know what it is.” Carrey then lists several different comedians like Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, and David Letterman who he claims all know what the symbol is. “Come on, Jimmy, seriously, the time is up. People are hip to this kind of stuff. I’m here tonight, to blow the lid off it, to be the Whistleblower. I’m sick and tired of the secrets and the lies. It is the secret symbol of the Illuminati. You’re a part of it,” Carrey said, pointing a finger at Kimmel. “It’s the all-mocking tongue.”
When the episode was released, it sounded like the fans were laughing the whole time at Carrey’s strange behavior and conspiracy theories, but in reality, the reaction from the audience was a lot different. Commenting under reposts of the original video, fans said that the laugh tracks were added in during editing. One commenter from two years ago, @guybenbaruch, said “My friend worked at the cast in Jimmy’s show. When that happened, the audience did NOT laugh at all. They edited the laughs in, the audience was dead silent.” Similarly, @CrystalLorenz-y5m commented, “A laugh track was added to this clip. I remember this…No one was laughing after the initial laugh when Jim first sat down.”
Viewers are also saying that Kimmel didn’t even look surprised at Carrey’s outburst, confirming that he did know what the symbol meant, just as Carrey predicted.
All in all, there are a handful of theories for Carrey’s supposed disappearance. But the one that sticks out the most is that Carrey didn’t disappear—he was silenced. In the light of recent events, including the release of the Epstein files, fans are speculating that Carrey knew the truth about the files the entire time, and had been trying to warn us. In 2018, Carrey gave a speech at the BAFTAs when receiving his Charlie Chaplin Award for Excellence in Comedy. The speech quickly turned viral due to the bluntness of Carrey’s words, and then again went viral in the new year once the files were released. This is because the words Carrey spoke so boldly sounded awfully familiar to thousands of readers…
“Shamelessness is not, and will never be, a superpower. It is the mark of a villain. Kidnapping children is not what great nations do. Almost half of America at this moment believes that there is a sinister deep state, diabolically plotting to what? Give them healthcare? What is the sinister plan here? We in America are misinformed. Reality shows how warped our idea of what a hero is.”
Did Carrey go too far? According to fans, the words he’d spoken needed to be heard, but ultimately ended in his demise.
Despite the crazy theories and conspiracies, there is a definite possibility that nothing has happened to Carrey at all. After all, Carrey is 64 years old. It is very possible that he was simply feeling nostalgic and sentimental during his time at the Cesar Awards, overwhelmed with the love and support from fans across the globe, and the end of his impressively long and successful career. It is also possible that between November and February, Carrey could have gotten plastic surgery or botox to make him appear younger and more clear-faced, even though most fans agree that Carrey would have been against that. It’s important to remember the reach of social media and how quickly things can take a drastic turn. However, with the way things have been going recently, fans feel pretty warranted in their suspicions.
Only time will tell what really happened to Carrey, but most viewers would agree that something fishy is going on.
