The literary team is a club that hosts a collection of events such as: singing, writing, and speaking. Every year, generals join this club for an opportunity to expand on their abilities and talents.
On March 4th, the literary team visited Calhoun for region; Generals spent months practicing for this opportunity and were ready to finally let their hard work pay off. Groups that went include: Sarah Kate Colquette, Hannah Johnston, and Haley Rens, the region runner-ups for Girls Trio, and Isaiah Dennis, Will Farmer, Aiden Tipton, and Maddox Weaver were also runners-up for Boys Quartet. Individual results: Isaiah Dennis placed third for Boys Solo, Madison Kelley placed third for International Extemporaneous Speaking, and Hayden Fessenden Places third for International Extemporaneous Speaking. One General, however, came out of this competition as a champion: Ceci Ward, who placed first in Girls Solo.
Ward didn’t just stop once she became a region champion, she continued practicing and “working out the kinks” leading up to state with Mrs. Jennifer Hamilton, our Choir Director. The songs she was preparing to sing were “That’ll Show Him” by Stephen Sondheim and a foreign language piece titled “Quando M’en Vo” by Giacomo Puccini, which is from the opera La Bohème.
“Oh [she is] fantastic. I’m just so proud of her. She’s always had this beautiful voice, but just recently, she’s just, I feel taking it to the next level,” said Mrs. Hamilton.
Once Ward got to state, she completely dominated there as well. She got an outstanding score of 99 out of 100 from the judges and one of them even made a comment on how high the quality of instruction Mrs. Hamilton must be providing for her.
“I was super relieved and really surprised and honestly, really proud because I wasn’t expecting to have been able to win, and I had some really steep competition,” said Ward.
Ward put so much dedication into what she does and winning state gives her some recognition she truly deserves. If you see her in the hallway, make sure to tell her congratulations.
