Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, welcomed their newborn baby girl this week. She was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in London May 2. The new princess is 4th in line for the British throne behind Prince Charles, Prince William and the baby’s big brother, George. The baby is going to be called Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. Her full name however is Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. British tradition is to name children after relatives, and this baby has lots of tradition wrapped up in her name. Charlotte is the feminine version of Charles, and the baby’s grandfather is Prince Charles. Elizabeth is the name of the baby’s great grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, the reigning Queen of England. Sadly, Diana was the baby’s grandmother who passed away in a car wreck years ago, but her name was included, too. Charles and Diana are Prince William’s parents.

Other popular stories from the birth include Princess Charlotte’s birth certificate craziness. The document created interest in the news because her father, Prince William, signed his name, and others said it looked like “Willy” and not William, but that is also more of just his handwriting. It also seems strange that they do not seem to have a last name, which is actually another royal tradition that they do not have to use a family last name. However, in this case they do have a last name and it is “Mountbatten-Windsor.”
