On account of Halloween being (literally) right around the corner, we are faced with cheesy 80’s scary movies, pumpkin carving, and let us not forget, Ana and Elsa costumes down every street. Halloween can either be a creative or very bland time for individuals, and one student at Heritage High School has something in store to insure some spooks and scares this Halloween.

Special effects makeup has been used in horror movies dating all the way back to the 1920’s. Now, though, it has evolved greatly in quality, with movies including “Phantom of the Opera,” “The Bride of Frankenstein,” and “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” utilizing special effects makeup to shock the viewer.

Georgia Upton, a sophomore at Heritage, discovered a talent so unique, it cannot be ignored around this spooky holiday. After being inspired from a musical in which she performed, Georgia has taken up the hobby of special effects paintings. We are talking zombie bites, stitches, blood, and any other imaginable gruesome effect. When asked what supplies she uses and how she practices, she explained that she only uses standard paintbrushes. Although she didn’t sound incredibly pleased with her technique, the end product comes out horrifyingly perfect. She always practices her paintings on herself and stated, “My sister would probably kill me if I did some of this to her.”

Naturally, for someone with a talent like special effects makeup, Halloween costumes would be a breeze, but when asked about her character for this Halloween, Upton said, “I actually haven’t figured out what I am going to be yet…I am kinda disappointed in myself.” One thing’s for certain: although she hasn’t decided a costume yet, with her advanced makeup skills, Georgia Upton’s makeup will turn out horrifying.
