TICKET PUNCHED

Seth Carter, Staff Writer

The varsity boys’ soccer team had two goals this season: to be the third seed and make it to the state playoffs. I am proud to say they have accomplished both and finished the regular season on a nine-game winning streak. This feat was not done without hard work and sacrifice there were many games in the cold, rain, and sleet. However, that did not deter the boys from grinding out results and punching their ticket to state. This season there has been one phrase going around the team and it was made by Coach Sawyer at the start of the year. He would say, “Boys all you have to do is punch your ticket four times and we are in state.” By punching your ticket, he obviously meant beating teams and making it to state. At the beginning for their first region win it looked like it would be a battle all year when they beat Gilmer 4-2 on penalties. Then after two region losses to perennial powerhouses Northwest and Southeast they knew they had to run the table and win the rest of the region games and they did convincingly. In the last three region games, they outscored opponents 13-2. None of those games were even close. Now onto to state the boys will travel to St. Pius Wednesday. St. Pius is very good, but they have some holes in the back where Jameson Wright and Ethan Demo will be able to exploit. I know it is a long drive to Atlanta, but if you can make it, I encourage you to come and support your Generals as they battle it out!
