The age-old question of which American muscle car is the best is one that has stumped the minds of people for years. So many opinions are flying around, and I’m putting mine out there for everyone to see. First of all, there are only two of them that actually have any competition; the other is kind of pointless, if you ask me. The Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and the Chevy Camaro ZL1 are very good competitors for each other, while the Dodge Challenger can’t hold a candle to these two, so I’m not even going to talk about it.

When it comes to power, the Camaro has the Mustang beat by a long shot. The Camaro’s 6.2 liter supercharged V8 produces 650 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque while the Mustang’s 5.2 liter V8 produces 526 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. That might not seem like much from the Mustang, but the engine from that car is the most powerful naturally aspirated engine in Ford’s history. It’s also Ford’s highest revving production engine to date. While some would say that Chevy cheated with the addition of a supercharger to their already powerful engine, I would say it was smart thinking from Chevy rather than “cheating.”

Power isn’t everything though: handling is very important as well. The Mustang has a cutting-edge Magne-Ride damper system and suspension to make cornering as fast and balanced as possible, as well as Brembo brake calipers to deliver confidence on the street or track. The Camaro also boasts an impressive suspension and brake combo with a Magnetic Ride Control suspension that reads the road over a thousand times a second to help you control the LT4 engine. Brembo brakes are also fitted to the Camaro to give it precise braking while resisting fade.

As far as looks go, the Mustang is far better-looking, in my opinion. The way that the lines resemble a racing car is very nice to look at. Having said that, the Camaro isn’t an ugly car; it still has its appeal as well. The Camaro has a sharper. more modern look that is very nice as well. But you can’t beat the way the Mustang looks.

My final opinion is that the Mustang is better. You may have your own opinion and that’s fine, but there is mine. The Camaro, in my opinion, is like a wild animal, powerful and strong but unable to be controlled, whereas the Mustang is like a horse that has been broken—still strong, just easier to control and way more fun.
