Giant robots fighting enormous, Godzilla-like creatures from below sounds like something a toddler with his imagination would come up with when playing. However, the giant robots with super cool guns, lasers, and futuristic weapons are called Jaegers in the movie “Pacific Rim.” “Jaeger” comes from the German word jäger, meaning“hunter.” The film is set in the future when Earth is at war with the Kaiju, colossal sea monsters which have emerged from an interdimensional portal on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. To combat the monsters, humanity unites to create the Jaegers, which are controlled by at least two pilots, whose minds are joined by a mental link. Again, it may seem sort of childish, but the pictures and action of the movie are absolutely amazing. In the first “Pacific Rim,” Marshal Stacker Pentecost trained the hero Raleigh Becket how to fight the Kaiju but sadly died a hero’s death later on in the movie. In this upcoming sequel, Jake Pentecost (Stacker’s son) carries the legacy of Pacific Rim and is the new hero. Jake is being played by John Boyega, the new “Star Wars” wonder. When we meet him, he’s a “rogue” and a “criminal,” selling Jaeger parts to pay off gambling debts. Jake’s foil will be Amara, a scrappy 15-year-old girl who has a knack for building Jaegers and whose parents were killed in the war ten years ago. The new film comes out on March 23 and is sure to be a blast.
