From sitting in the corner of her mom’s elementary school classroom, to wanting to be a teacher herself, Abby Delk has a strong passion for wanting to teach elementary students.
Delk is 17 years old and a junior at Heritage High School. In her free time she likes to read fantasy books and write poems. She does chorus and theatre, but this year she took a break from theatre so she can focus on her dual enrollment classes.
For a while now she has wanted to pursue a teaching career with third or fourth graders. She was accepted into the College and Career Academy (CCA), where she takes the education class. She comes to school for her first two classes in the morning, then for the second half of the day she’s off to the academy. For her education class at CCA, she gets to intern at an educational building of her choice; she chose the Creative Discovery Museum.
When Delk was little, her mom would take her and her siblings to work with her whenever they were sick, and Delk would sit in the corner of her mom’s room while watching her mom teach the elementary students. These experiences and being accepted into the CCA led her to wanting to be a teacher.

“I’m really working towards being a teacher. I’m really passionate about it. I grew up with my mom who was a teacher and she would take us [to her school] when we were sick. She would take us to her school and she would just put us in a little corner of her classroom,” Delk explained. “But it was really fun watching her teach because I was like, ‘man, I really want to do the same thing.’”
Hannah Johnston, a junior and friend of Delk, says that Abby is super passionate about helping kids. When asked to rank her passion for teaching on a scale of 1-10 Johnston replied with “It would honestly be a 10 because I feel like she’s just so passionate about helping kids. She’s just one of the people who prioritizes helping kids.”
