Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching, and Heritage is helping you get your special someone a gift! To commemorate the day, the Heritage High School agriculture classes will be hosting their annual flower sale. Along with that, there will be a love letter floral workshop at the middle school. It costs $40 which includes all of the supplies and refreshments.
Valentine’s Day has been happening for centuries dating all the way back to 496 A.D. to honor Saint Valentine. It came from a mix of Roman, pagan, and Christian traditions, and evolved from the fertility festival of Lupercalia. It became what we see today in the 1900s during industrialization. This introduced mass-produced, cheap greeting cards, as well as other commercialized gifts like chocolate. Now we often see couples going out for romantic dinners, exchanging gifts, or a planned date night to celebrate this holiday. It’s also common for people to buy flowers or candy for their significant others. “We’re going to eat out somewhere, and then go see Wuthering Heights,” said Mr. Peace, one of the English teachers at Heritage.
But what if you don’t have a partner to spend Valentine’s with? Sophomore Miranda Wright says “I’m going to my grandparents to have fun and eat Hershey’s kisses.” Often, people who are single spend time with their friends or spend that day taking care of themselves. It’s common for people, specifically women who are single, to celebrate Galentine’s. Galentine’s is on February 13th, and is dedicated to celebrating female friendships. No matter if you’re in a relationship or single, there’s still so many ways to have fun. But for those who are not so fond of Valentine’s Day there’s still a holiday for you that comes very rarely called Evil Valentine’s.
