The “Secret Teacher dress up week” is a fun tradition that has been going on for two years. It’s an idea that originated from Mrs. Brown, who likely drew inspiration from TikTok trends. The event involves teachers dressing up according to a specific theme each day, adding an element of surprise and amusement to the school environment. Tuesday (1/20) was “Spies in Disguise,” Wednesday (1/21) was “Wiggin’ out Wednesday,” Thursday (1/22) was “PJs and Chill,” and Friday (1/23) was “Rep Your Squad FriYay.”
The planning for this year’s event faced some challenges. Originally scheduled for the week before Thanksgiving, it was postponed. December was deemed too hectic, so January was chosen as the ideal time.
This year’s event differed from the previous ones in a few ways. More teachers participated, and the themes were considered more enjoyable. Mr. Lee even rocked an awesome emo wig to show his commitment. Despite the best efforts to remain incognito, some staff found it difficult to maintain their secret identities. Mr Lee, wearing a my chemical romance shirt, was easily recognized by many students. “It was hard for me to keep it a secret because I was wearing a My Chemical Romance shirt and a wig, so the kids definitely knew something was up, especially that day. But it was weird to walk around with absolutely no context.” Said Mr. Lee
The secret teacher dress up week is a prime example of why it’s crucial for teachers to participate in fun, lighthearted activities. It’s easy for teachers to get caught up in the demands of their jobs, but taking the time to engage in events like this allows them to connect with students on a more personal level. It humanizes the teachers, showing them as real people with interests and a sense of humor, which can break down barriers and create a more approachable atmosphere.
This kind of interaction can boost student engagement, create positive memories, and remind everyone that school can be a place of joy and camaraderie, not just a place of learning.
Looking ahead, there’s a desire to make the event even crazier and more engaging. One suggestion is to even involve the students by having them create their own “secret student dress up week.”
