WITCHER NETFLIX SERIES

Shane Morehead, Staff Writer

Netflix has announced that a live-action show based on “Witcher” is in development. “Witcher” is better known for the video game series, but the games are actually based on a fantasy series of eight novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. There are a few differences between the games and novels. The Netflix original is expected to be based more on the “Witcher” books rather than the games though. The author of the books commented on it at in a press release, saying that “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and themes that I have spent over thirty years writing.” The original plan was for a movie, but those plans were scrapped for a TV show. Producer Sean Daniel (of “The Mummy” and “The Expanse”), Tomek Baginski (“The Cathedral”), and Jared Sawko are all attached to the project. The show might be difficult to make, because they have to keep both the books and games in mind while making it. A large part of the viewers will be people that are familiar with the games, and certain elements from the book might discourage them. Viewers might expect the cast to look like the video game characters, but that won’t be the case. Many people don’t see the need for another fantasy show, because of “Game Of Thrones,” but the “Witcher” books are more oriented on magic and mythical creatures, which are both things that “Game Of Thrones” lacks. If it’s done right, then it has the potential to be just as popular as “Game Of Thrones” and it could maybe even be a good video game associated series.
