An Unexpected First Day

On August 7, 2023, the doors of Heritage High School were opened once again. Both old and new Generals found themselves in the halls that morning. Nerves and excitement were high as the student body, as always, gathered in the gym for the First Day of School assembly. The seniors did their traditional walk into the gym as the underclassman applauded them. Principal Bradford welcomed everyone back to Heritage and explained his aspirations for this year. Then, he passed the microphone off to the Class of 2024 Officers. President Grayson Stallings greeted his fellow students and hyped them up for the new school year, Vice President Anna Gayler led the Pledge of Allegiance and Secretary Avah Morrison commenced the moment of silence. New Teachers were then introduced by Mr. Bradford, they are as follows: Ms. Armour, Mrs. Bailey, Mr. Dempsey, Mr. Fleming, Mrs. Hamill, Mrs. Jones, Mr. McMillan, Mr. Natola, Mrs. Pursley, Mrs. Spradin, Mrs. White, Mrs. Barry, and Mrs. Collins.

The students were then dismissed from the gym. Everyone headed to their 1st block class to settle in and prepare to “Go Clubbing” around the school, which was this year’s First Day of School Activity. While freshmen, sophomores, and juniors were roaming the halls, learning about the different clubs offered at Heritage, the senior class was in the cafeteria feasting on their Senior Breakfast. After an eventful morning, the school day officially began. Students slowly made their way through the day, getting a general feel for their classes. Then the unexpected happened. Due to severe weather, students were dismissed from school at 12:45 PM, cutting the first day of school very short. When reflecting on the first day, social studies teacher Mrs. Zipp stated, “I guess that I would say that the first day at HHS was a day like no other. Our “Go Clubbing” activity was fun and a big success, my classes and students were great and then…we were dismissed early for bad weather! Our first day of school is definitely one that we will all remember.” Overall, the first day back was successful, nerve-racking and eventful, but successful.

Allie is very involved in her school, which she thoroughly enjoys. She doesn’t want to look back at high school and think “I should have done more.” It’s her senior year, and she is going to live it up as much as possible. She’s excited for this school year and what’s to come. This year, she is taking AP Art, which will be an entirely new experience for her. She loves art and has always enjoyed creating pieces that are significant, so she is anxious to see how this class goes. Allie is also thrilled to be designing the HHS Legacy for the second year in a row. She has many plans and ideas that she is ready to put into action. As far as outside of school goes, Allie finds herself either watching movies, painting, or writing books. Her creative juices are always flowing, and she is chomping at the bit to create her own story someday. Overall, Allie is ready to soak in her last year of high school and enjoy every moment, the good and the bad.
