On January 17th the HHS 5 star dance team went to Model for a competition. They did an outstanding performance, ending in 2nd place with a score difference of 0.3.
Mrs. Beth Chappelear, coach for the dance team and STEM teacher at HMS, says that although they weren’t happy with their placement, the team is already striving and working hard for the next competition.
“Although we had made needed adjustments from our judges’ feedback from the prior competition, our score went down. One of our biggest goals from competition to competition is for our score to improve. The feedback we received from the judges did not help us understand why the score dropped. However, we know that we are growing and improving each week and we also have to always keep in mind that the scoring system can be subjective,” Mrs. Chappelear said.
Sarah Kate Colquette, (9th) is pleased with their scoring for the fact that they were only 0.3 points away. “We could do better on our motions, those needed to be stronger, and have bigger faces,” Colquette said.
The team is moving onto the next big thing, getting ready for competitions and performances, “Our practices have been intense and focused. We have additional exercises, both mental and physical, that our girls are committed to doing outside of practice too. Lots of critiques and cleans are happening, and we are very impressed by the coachability of these girls. They are not afraid to push to be better at each practice. It can be mentally discouraging to accept continuous feedback and critiques on ways to change and improve, but being willing to listen, adapt, and immediately demonstrate that they are committed to the overall performance of the team and not just themselves is what makes this team great.” Chapp said. The coaches are very proud of the team and can’t wait for their next performance.
Congratulations to the HHS 5 star dance team, their dedication, hard work, and teamwork are shining through the setbacks and wins!
